Piranha's are in the Characidae family. Many other aquarium fish are in this family. They are in a family of there own called the Serrasalmidae family. And then after that there is the separate genera: Pygocentrus, Serrasalmus, Pristobrycon, Pygopristis, Colossoma, Metynnis, Catoprion and then a few more.
